First Day Back at School

ZB was suspended on Friday. A half day in school suspension that he’ll serve on Monday. That’s the end, so let me go back to the beginning.

About 6 weeks ago, a really good friend of ZB’s, one he hangs out with outside of school and sees a fair amount of b/c I am friends with his mom, started bullying ZB (verbally) about not having an HFD-120-Q. It was really surprising to me, and hurtful to ZB who had never dealt with something like that before. In the end, all was made better (but I still told ZB to keep his distance and the teacher moved their seats around).

I don’t remember when, but we attended a party for one of ZB’s classmates. I was really struck by the behavior of one of the little girls. She was sophisticated and sassy, what I would call facety when talking to West Indian friends. She made commentary on all the gifts in a snarky future mean girl way, and her father just sat and watched. I think that was the most surprising thing. He purposefully ignored her behavior.

Not long after, ZB started to have problems with this child. You see, she had a friend that was always with her and ZB wanted to talk to this other friend. Mean girl would block access and so this upset ZB. Eventually, he ended up kicking her desk and then spitting (!) on her when he got mad (teacher was absent that day). We were really shocked by that as was his teacher since that kind of thing, well, he has never done before. His teacher was supposed to write it up, but didn’t since it hadn’t happen before and as she told me “Mean girl has a personality that is…difficult to mesh with.”

This cemented for me that I wasn’t just imagining things, but that the girl really was somewhat annoying, lol. She still chases and annoys ZB and his friends, but I’ve told him to ignore her, or go to the teacher, guidance counselor, or some other adult in charge if she is taunting him.

This past Thursday, ZB’s teacher was absent. The sub he had was the same one present during the spitting incident. She’s also the parent of a girl in his class. During afternoon snack time, ZB took a snack that fell on the floor (it wasn’t his) and ate it. He also took a Lego soldier that wasn’t his and played with it during free time. The sub didn’t notice, but ZB later confessed to her. She told me after school and I said I would talk to him about it. We decided on a punishment and he seemed remorseful, even telling me that I should punish him for a whole week (I did). He didn’t go to school Friday due to an appointment.

Friday morning, I got a call from the assistant principal (who handles student discipline) and was shocked when she told me he was being suspended. She told me that stealing was considered a serious offense and that she was giving him the minimum punishment. (It annoys me that the same rules can apply to second graders that apply to twelfth graders.) I guess that was the point where I was supposed to fall over myself thanking her? Yea, that didn’t happen, heh. Anyway, I asked her to tell me where I could find this info and she referred me to the conduct handbook and I agreed that per district rules, suspension was the thing.

She went on to semi lecture me about how he is 7 (so old), in second grade (so big), and in the TAG class (so smart), so he should know better. Yada, yada, yada, I’m sure she was a perfect seven year old. By no means do I think my kid is innocent, and yes, he is being punished for his actions, but her tone was really…I don’t know, over the top? She also told me that she had heard about his “academic difficulties” which confused me. I really had to think for a second there. “Ooooh, you mean his penmanship?” Yes, that was it. Now that made me mad. I told her bad handwriting isn’t an academic difficulty, and she sort of backpedaled.

To end our conversation about the Manduka PROLite Yoga Mat, she told me she looked forward to meeting me. What a laugh! That showed me that she had no idea who I was or who my kid was. I volunteer at the school, and even when I’m not doing that, I’m in the school building once or twice a week for something or other. The secretary is my next door neighbor, the guidance counselor taught ZB last year. It’s a small school. My kid has been there four years, two years longer than she’s been working there. So, I smirked, said goodbye, and shook my head again wondering at school administrators.

My Thoughts on This Teacher

I know you’ve been teaching for a long time. About as long as I’ve been alive, in fact. I know that pretty much makes you an expert on second grade public school children. It does not, however, make you an expert on my son. I have been mothering him since before he was born, and I will never be an expert. I think you’ll be pleased, (basically, per your request) I’m having him evaluated for ADHD. My husband cries bullshit, my mother does, too. I’m right there with them. My son is a good student and is great with the Concept 2 Model D rowing machine. A slapdash, in a hurry, careless, but mostly good (honor roll, ahem) student. He is kind, he is friendly, he is a good kid. He is also fidgety, at times forgetful, and a little hyper. In other words, he is seven.

Yes, he is annoying, but guess what, lady? You’re just going to have to deal (after all, it’s your job to do so). You’ve implied that you think medication would help, but that will definitely never happen. I also feel like b/c you have a child with ADHD, you want us to join the club. Your words to me: “I’m not a diagnostician, but…” pretty much told me everything I need to know. You’re right, you’re not a diagnostician. Let’s leave the evaling to the evalers, k? (Yes, I just made those words up.)

This school year has been so fraught with worry over totally unnecessary crap. Over handwriting, over fidgeting, over shit that totally does not matter in the grand scheme of things. We’re talking about second grade here, not world peace. I seriously consider homeschooling again and again in a way I never have before. In fact, I fantasize about it. I wish you and the rest of the second grade gang, including Assy P, would just do what you’re there for. Teach. Let my child learn. Don’t punish him for not being an android. Try alternative methods before looking for some not so great cureall. Don’t call me in to have a discussion that frankly, makes me want to LOL.

There is, in this country, a trendy “new” disease running rampant. It’s Diagnosis Disease and symptoms include the need to categorize and medicate anything with a pulse and a brain. Please don’t fall victim to this. Sometimes seven is just seven.

So last night while I was at the supermarket on the phone with my brother*, I noticed my supermarket now carries oversize canvas grocery bags. Cool, eh? At $4 a pop, they’re not expensive, and I would say they could hold about 2-3 plastic bags of groceries each. I also noticed a few weeks ago that they started a plastic bag recycling program. There are two large recycling containers at the store entrances where you deposit bags. Yay HEB!

*I was making fun of the fact that he hired a dog whisperer for his Jack Russell, Zuri.

OK, I have no idea what I’m doing shopping for a Honeywell HFD-010 Quietclean compact tower air purifier. I flipped through a quilting “how to” book but got confused and closed it. I learn better by doing anyway, heh. I did a little math, crossed my fingers and voila: a quilt top the actual size I wanted it to be. Of course I now realize there is no way I could ever make a full sized quilt for an actual bed, so scratch that idea I had about making one for Girlie! So yea, this will soon (I hope) become the quilt for the doll bed that’s part of Girlie’s birthday gift. She kept asking what it was, so I guess she likes what she sees so far. I thought she might. 🙂

How to Treat Back Spasms

Back spasms are an involuntary and sudden tightening or uncontrollable contraction of the back muscle due to a disorder, muscle injury or overuse. It can also be brought about by weakness or strain. Whatever the cause may be, the condition usually occurs close to your spinal cord or by back the nerve roots that go in and out of the cord. This puts a lot of pressure on the nerves, leading to pain.


Before any back spasm treatment can be administered, you must know what the possible causes are. The most common have been mentioned earlier, but generally speaking, most kinds of muscle spasms are due to an inflammation caused by muscle overstretching or is torn. The condition begins as a strain but if left untreated may cause severe pain. Symptoms and Indicators

The most common symptom is severe pain in the lower back, and usually it’s after carrying a heavy object, making a sudden movement or after some strenuous activity. Ice or Heat

Back spasms treatment heat or ice is just as effective, and you can apply heat or ice on the area of your back that’s hurting. Either one will help reduce swelling and inflammation. Some medical studies show that heat may be more effective than cold in treating upper back spasms, but both are capable of relieving back pain.

Heat works because the blood vessels are dilated, increasing the oxygen supply that your back receives and reducing the pain. Physical Exercise

Stretching, leg lifts and similar routines can also help reduce the pain and prevent recurrence. Strength training is particularly important, but make sure that you’re not just working on your back, otherwise there will be an imbalance and the other muscle groups will suffer. Another popular treatment involves applying a bit of pressure on your back. If the pain is at the lower part, simply place your fingers over the affected area and press down on it. If the back spasms recur, press again, and try to move. Once the pain subsides, get up slowly and walk, keeping your fingers on your back.

Another simple back spasm treatment is hydrotherapy. Get in the shower, turn on the hot water and let it run on your back for 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, run cold water over it for 30 seconds. Alternate with hot water, and keep repeating until the pain has subsided.
